Organic vitamins and minerals? You’ve heard a lot of these terms. But what does the word organic mean for vitamins and minerals? Human body is made up of four elements of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen, which together represent about 96% of body weight[1]. However, these four elements are not normally part of the main nutritive minerals. The major minerals (macro minerals) and minor minerals (trace elements) compose the remaining percent.
The five major minerals in the human body are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and magnesium (macro minerals or macro elements).[2] Calcium represents 920 g to 1200 g of an adult’s body weight, 99% of which contains it in bones and teeth.

The trace elements with specific biochemical function in human body are iodine, sulfur, zinc, iron, chlorine, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and selenium.”

This represents about 1.5% of the body weight.[3] Together, these 11 chemical elements (O, Ca, P, K, Na, H, C, N, Cl, Mg, S) represent 99.85% of the human body. The remaining ~ 18 ultratraceous minerals make up only 0.15% of the human body, or about 1g in total for the average person.

Essential nutrients cannot be made or synthesized in the human body (organism), either at all or in insufficient amounts, and therefore must be obtained by the diet, just as some beneficial phytochemicals are not synthesized in the body.[4]

“Although they are all considered micro nutrients, vitamins and minerals differ in basic ways. Vitamins are organic and can be broken down by heat, air, or acid. Minerals are inorganic and hold on to their chemical structure. “[5]

Vitamins in our Body

The body cannot synthesize vitamins in sufficient quantity and they must be supplied by food. Daily vitamin requirements are only a few fractions of a micro gram to a few milligrams. This is because most of them act as co enzymes or co factors during enzymatic reactions.

The best way to get enough vitamins is to eat a balanced diet from a variety of foods. In fact, when you eat real food, you are not consuming single nutrients, but rather a whole range of vitamins, minerals, co factors and enzymes that allow optimal use by the body.

What means the term of organic?

In Chemistry, in general, an organic compound is a type of compound that contains the molecules composed of carbon and hydrogen, and may contain any number of other elements. Conversely, an inorganic compound would be one that does not contain.

Or any substance containing carbon-based compounds, especially produced by or derived from living organisms.

In agriculture, this term use for an organic food; or any food that is organically grown without using or applying synthetic pesticides, fungicides, inorganic fertilizers, or preservatives.

What do organic vitamins and minerals mean?

According to the definition cited above, all vitamins would be considered organic. Another meaning, would refer to the methods and materials used to produce vitamin supplements :

  • Chemically organic vitamin or mineral, has a chemical composition with carbon.
  • nutritionally organic vitamin or mineral, is chelated or linked to organic molecules, such as an amino acid.
  • The chelated form of a mineral means that it is able to be absorbed more readily by the body and is therefore available for the body to use.
  • the mineral and vitamin content of food is labeled in organic farming, this means that the minerals and vitaminsof this food is grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.
  • In fact, synthetic vitamin has the same chemical structure as the natural vitamin, but it is produced artificially through a bio-chemical process. They are usually in an isolated form.

How to know if your supplement is synthetic or natural?

To find out if your supplement is synthetic or natural, simply consult the label.

National Organic Program NOP allows four distinct organic labeling claims for finished products:

  • “100 percent organic” Must contain only ingredients that are certified 100 percent organic and, if applicable, organic processing aids.   • “ Organic ” Must contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients.
  • “Made with organic [specific ingredients]” Must contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients.
  • Some organic ingredients Apply only to processed products Contains less than 70 percent organic ingredients; or Organic ingredient statement claim only For both the “organic” and the “made with organic” labeling claims, any non organic ingredients or processing aids used to produce the final product must be produced without the use of genetically modified organisms, irradiation and sewage sludge (used as a fertilizer).
  • Vitamins and minerals listed in 21 CFR 104.20(d)(3)of FDA may be added. This section permits the use of the following nutrients for fortification in accordance with its policy: protein, calcium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, biotin, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iodine, copper, potassium, and vitamins A, C, C, E, B6, and B12.
